Bethany’s Reads: Daisy Jones and The Six & Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

Hi friends, I’m back with two more book recommendations. You can find my previous reviews here: 1 2 3.

I’m a fully obsessed reader these days. I’m currently on my 88th book of 2022! It’s almost embarrassing, but I love reading so much. I use our local public library a lot, I’m a member of the Book of the Month club, I use (and love!) my kindle e-reader, and I of course pick up books at Walmart! They have such a great selection of books these days.

The two books I’m recommending today are ones that I thoroughly enjoyed, obviously. Now, I will admit (as my IRL book club likes to tease me about) that I’m not too hard to please. I love so many different genres: Literary Fiction, Romance/Rom-Com, Fantasy, Thriller, Historical Fiction. I rarely read nonfiction, but I’ve even knocked out a few of those this year. Pro Tip: Listening to the audio version of nonfiction books helps me get through them faster.

Now to the good part… I can’t wait to hear what you think of these two faves!

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

If you grew up loving Behind the Music episodes on VH1, then you’ll love the format and storyline of Daisy Jones and The Six. Like the show, this book’s story of the rise of an iconic rock band unfolds in interviews of the various band members and those closest to them. It’s a fascinating story of the classic cliché that all bands in the 70s revolved around: sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Daisy is an un-parented, free-spirit girl navigating coming of age in LA, while the band The Six is playing loads of shows and beginning to get noticed. A producer puts them together and you’ll have to read the book to find out just how that goes. Spoiler Alert: There is drama.

Bonus: It’s been filmed for a miniseries! Definitely give it a read before you watch the show.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

I’m a sucker for love stories… romantic or friendship, it doesn’t matter. I’m here for all of the highs and lows of how people interact with one another. This beautiful, gripping story is about the friendship of two underdogs, Sam and Sadie, and unfolds in a nonlinear timeline that has lots of twists and turns as their lives come together and grow apart repeatedly over the years starting in childhood and growing into adulthood. Their deep friendship is foundational to each of their character in an unmatched and meaningful way. They start and build a gaming company that takes off and challenges their friendship in ways they never saw coming. They have to battle success, fame, grief, and love of the game. It gives the characters and the reader a healthy dose of destiny, but one that’s rooted in reality. I laughed, I cried, and I adored the dynamics of their painfully beautiful friendship.

Heads Up: This book was a slow build initially, so give it time and have patience with the narrative.
